Water jet sand, the full name of water jet cutting abrasive, is mixed with water jet sand to form an abrasive jet to cut metal or other materials, and the cutting thickness sometimes exceeds 150mm. Usually, silica, alumina or garnet with a particle size of 30-150 mesh is used as the abrasive, of which 80-100 mesh garnet sand is the most commonly used. Garnet, chemical name aluminum (calcium) silicate, is brownish red sand-like uniform small particles, slightly black impurities and a small amount of floating dust.
The selected content is 85.4% garnet rock ore, which is artificially dried to make the moisture content less than 4.7%. After mechanical pulverization, pickling (to remove impurities), water washing (to remove sediment and dust), and secondary artificial drying (to facilitate screening and dust removal) , the moisture content is less than 5%. Finally, the packaging is screened with an advanced secondary screening process (to make the particles more uniform).

In the application of water jet cutting, the crystal size of garnet can meet its particle size requirements, that is, 0.06-1.0 cm. Compared with diamond grinding wheels and wire saws, water jet cutting using garnet sand has good three-dimensional adaptability, low cost, excellent processing performance, and basically no dust and no pollution.
In abrasive water jet cutting, since abrasives complete more than 90% of the cutting work, the properties and characteristics of abrasive particles become the most important factor. The most commonly used abrasive is garnet with a particle size of 60-100 mesh. The harder the abrasive, the shorter the life of the nozzle. This is why silicon carbide and diamond are obviously harder but rarely used.
